As a locally owned tour operator based in Marrakech, we’ve welcomed thousands of travellers from around the world. The question we hear most often before arrival is: “Is Morocco safe?”
The Short Answer
Yes. Morocco is one of the safest countries in North Africa and ranks well in global safety indexes. Millions of tourists visit every year without incident. The government has invested heavily in tourism security, and tourist areas are well-policed.
What You Should Know
Petty Crime
Like any tourist destination, pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas (Jemaa el-Fna, busy souks). Keep valuables in a front pocket or money belt. Use hotel safes for passports and excess cash.
Scams
The most common issues are:
- Unofficial guides: people offering to “show you the way” then demanding payment. Politely decline.
- Inflated prices: always negotiate in the souk. Start at 30-40% of the asking price.
- Restaurant overcharging: check the menu price before ordering, especially near Jemaa el-Fna.
None of these are dangerous — just annoying. A firm, friendly “no thank you” (“la, shukran”) solves most situations.
Solo Female Travel
Many women travel solo in Morocco without issues. The key is the same as anywhere: dress modestly in the medina, walk with confidence, and don’t feel obliged to engage with persistent touts. Our female team members live and work in Marrakech every day.
Road Safety
Moroccan roads outside cities can be winding and unfamiliar. This is one reason we strongly recommend organised tours with professional drivers rather than self-driving, especially for mountain passes and desert routes.
Our Tips
- Book activities through a licensed operator (like us) rather than street touts
- Keep a copy of your passport in your phone
- Save our WhatsApp number — we’re available 24/7 if you need help
- Drink bottled water (tap water is treated but can upset unfamiliar stomachs)
- Trust your instincts — if something feels off, walk away
The Bottom Line
Morocco is a welcoming, hospitable country where tourism is a way of life. The vast majority of Moroccans are genuinely friendly and proud to share their culture. With basic common sense, you’ll have a safe, memorable trip.
